LAHORE: Asma Jahangir-backed candidate Mian Israr-ul-Haq has been elected as the President of Supreme Court Bar Association SCBA), Geo News reported.
Mian Israr-ul-Haq outran Pakistan Peoples Party’s Awais Ahmad and an independent candidate Barrister Zafrullah in the race for the SCBA president.
On the other hand Raja Javed Iqbal laid claim to the slot of General Secretary.
Punjab’s Tahir Chaudhry, Khyberpakhtunkhwa’s Jamal Khatak, Balochistan’s Abdullah Kakar and Sindh’s Ainuddin walked away with the offices of deputy presidents.
The polling of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) annual elections for 2012-13 concluded peacefully here.
A total of 988, out of 1,168 registered voters in Lahore, polled their votes to elect new 22-member cabinet.
The polling started at 8.30 am which continued till 5:00 pm with an hour break from 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm.
Outgoing SCBA president Yasin Azad, former SCBA president Asma Jehangir, former SCBA president Aitzaz Ahsan, Senator Kazim Khan and others exercised their right of vote in Lahore.
The SCBA body consists of president, four vice-presidents (one from each province), secretary, additional secretary, finance secretary and 14 members elected from throughout Pakistan (at least two from each province). At least 57 candidates were contesting for 21 remaining slots except vice president KPK slot who had been elected unopposed.
The slot of president was reserved for Punjab this year and three candidates Awais Ahmed, Mian Israrul Haq and Zafarullah Khan were in the run.
Independent Democratic Group was supporting Mian Israrul Haq for the presidential slot and it enjoyed the support of SCBA's former president Asma Jahangir and the outgoing SCBAP president Yasin Azad. Whereas Ahmed Awais was backed by Hamid Khan Group.
The total number of SCBA voters is 2,592 and nine polling stations; one each was set up in Karachi, Hyderabad, Quetta, Peshawar, Abbottabad, Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur and Islamabad.
