Proposal for handing FIA anti-graft wings to NAB nixed
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has declined a proposal regarding handing over of FIA’s Anti-corruption and Economic Crime Wings to National Accountability Bureau, Geo News reported.
A summary in this regard was sent to PM, which recommended that in order to effectively deal with anti-corruption and economic crimes cases, the NAB must be invested with exclusive jurisdiction of FIA’s relevant wings.
The summary argued that such a restructuring would empower NAB on top of expanding its ambit of investigation.
According to sources the Chairman NAB Adm (Retd) Fasih Bukhari had sent the said summary to PM on January 20, 2012, but the PM eventually shot it down even after a long hum and haw.
It is mention-worthy that the Raja Pervez Ashraf’s predecessor Syef Yousuf Raza Gilani was in the favour of this intra-departmental acquisition.
Analysts say this rejection could be an upshot of an old grievance as NAB had been the premier investigating agency in the rental power scandal in which the incumbent PM was an accused.
